OKAN

Family : FABACEAE-MIMOSOIDEAE
Scientific name : CYLICODISCUS GABUNENSIS

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Reference colour: reddish brown
  • Sapwood: quite distinct
  • Grain: medium
  • Thread: counter-thread
  • Counter-thread: accused

Unpleasant odour when green. Perfect yellow-brown wood turns red-brown in air.

PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

These properties can vary significantly depending on the origin and growing conditions of the wood.

  • Density*: 0.91
  • Monnin* hardness: 10.3
  • Volume shrinkage coefficient: 0.61 –
  • Stability in service: moderately stable to slightly stable
  • Total radial shrinkage: 5.8
  • Fibre saturation point: 25
  • Total tangential shrinkage: 7.9
    (*: 12% moisture content)

NATURAL DURABILITY AND IMPREGNABILITY OF WOOD

  • Fungi: class 1 – very durable
  • Dry wood insects: durable; sapwood distinct (risk limited to sapwood)
  • Termites: class D – durable
  • Impregnability: 4 – not impregnable

Due to its high density and high silica content, it naturally covers biological risk class 5 (for use in marine environments or brackish water).

SAWING AND MACHINING

  • Sharpening effect: fairly high
  • Sawing teeth: stellite-tipped teeth
  • Machining tools: tungsten carbide

Requires power. Difficult to obtain a good finish because of the sometimes pronounced back grain. Tends to pull out on quarters.

ASSEMBLY

  • Screw nailing: good hold, pilot holes required
  • Gluing: correct (inside only)

END-USES

  • Hydraulic works
  • Sleepers
  • Heavy structural work
  • Bridges (in contact with the ground or water)
  • Bridges (parts not in contact with the ground or water)
  • Parquet (heavy or industrial)
  • Posts
  • Sculpture
