MOVINGUI

Family : CAESALPINIOIDEAE
Scientific name : DISTEMONANTHUS BENTHAMIANUS

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Reference colour: yellow
  • Sapwood: very distinct
  • Grain: medium
  • Thread: counter-thread
  • Counter-thread: light

Lemon yellow to yellow brown. Some logs produce a light, richly figured wood. Internal stresses and gales may be present.

PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

These properties can vary significantly depending on the origin and growing conditions of the wood. –

  • Density*: 0.73
  • Monnin* hardness: 5.6
  • Volume shrinkage coefficient: 0.54
  • Stability in service: moderately stable to stable
  • Total radial shrinkage: 3.6
  • Fibre saturation point: 23
  • Total tangential shrinkage: 5.8
    (*: 12% moisture content)

NATURAL DURABILITY AND IMPREGNABILITY OF WOOD

  • Fungi: class 3 – moderately durable
  • Dry wood insects: durable; sapwood distinct (risk limited to sapwood)
  • Termites: class M – moderately durable
  • Impregnability: 4 – not impregnable
  • Biological risk class: 2 – out of contact with the ground, sheltered (risk of wetting)

Movingui cannot be used without appropriate preservative treatment in applications corresponding to risk class 3, except for certain parts of the structure such as windows, which are less exposed than others (entrance doors, shutters, etc.). This wood is used for exterior joinery in tropical zones, but its use in temperate zones is limited by its susceptibility to by the rot fungus Coriolus versicolor.

SAWING AND MACHINING

  • Sharpening effect: high
  • Sawing teeth: stellite-tipped teeth
  • Machining tools: tungsten carbide

Some difficulties due to irregular grain. Plugging recommended to obtain a better finish.

ASSEMBLY

  • Nailing – Screwing: good hold, pilot holes required
  • Gluing: correct

Pilot holes recommended, especially for large-diameter nails, because of the risk of splitting.

END-USES

  • Movingui contains water-soluble yellow extracts that can stain parts in contact with wood.
  • Exterior and interior joinery
  • Panelling
  • Parquet flooring
  • Furniture
  • Light carpentry
