WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Reference colour: reddish brown
  • Sapwood: quite distinct
  • Grain: coarse

  • Counter grain: light

Red brown with purplish highlights. Darkens in the light. Black resin deposits in the pores. Ribboned appearance on quarter.

PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

These properties can vary significantly depending on the origin and growing conditions of the wood.

  • Density*: 0.69
  • Monnin* hardness: 3.3
  • Volume shrinkage coefficient: 0.42
  • Stability in service: stable
  • Total radial shrinkage: 4.8
  • Fibre saturation point: 32
  • Total tangential shrinkage: 6.7
    (*: 12% moisture content)

NATURAL DURABILITY AND IMPREGNABILITY OF WOOD

  • Fungi: cl 2-3 durable to moderately durable
  • Dry wood insects: durable; sapwood distinct (risk limited to sapwood)
  • Termites: class M – moderately durable
  • Impregnability: 3 – not very impregnable
  • Biological risk class: 2 – out of contact with the ground, sheltered (risk of wetting)

SAWING AND MACHINING

  • Sharpening effect: high
  • Sawing teeth: stellite-tipped teeth
  • Machining tools: tungsten carbide
  • Requires power. Sometimes difficult due to counter-wire (tearing). The de-sharpening effect varies from fairly high to very high (silica).

ASSEMBLY

  • Nailing – Screwing: good hold
  • Gluing: correct

END-USES

Sometimes, the presence of resin can hinder the adhesion of finishing products. Sanding requires care. Fillers are necessary for a good finish.

  • exterior and interior joinery –
  • panelling
  • furniture
  • parquet flooring
  • staircase
