DOUSSIE

Family : CAESALPINIACEAE
Scientific name : AFZELIA AFRICANA / BELLA / BIPINDENSIS / PACHYLOBA

WOOD DESCRIPTION

  • Reference colour: red brown
  • Sapwood: distinct property
  • Grain: coarse
  • Wire: straight or counter-wire
  • Counter-wire: light

Golden to pale red brown wood, sometimes veined with dark. Pores and cracks filled with yellow or white powder.

PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROPERTIES

These properties can vary significantly depending on the origin and growing conditions of the wood.

  • Density*: 0.80
  • Coin hardness*: 7.7
  • Coef. Volume Shrinkage: 0.44%
  • Stability in service: stable
  • Total radial shrinkage: 3.0%
  • Fiber saturation pt: 19%
  • Total tangential withdrawal: 4.4%
    (*: 12% moisture)

NATURAL DURABILITY AND IMPREGNABILITY OF WOOD

  • Mushrooms: cl 1 – very durable
  • Dry wood insects: durable; distinct sapwood (limited risk to sapwood)
  • Termites: class D – sustainable
  • Impregnability: 4 – non impregnable
  • Biological hazard class: 4 – in contact with soil or fresh water

SAWING AND MACHINING

  • Desafflant effect: quite significant
  • Sawing teeth: stellate teeth
  • Machining tools: with tungsten carbide
  • Peeling only recommended for decorative plating. Dust can cause irritation. Some difficulties due to the back wire (tearing).

ASSEMBLY

  • Nailing – Screwing: good hold, foreholes necessary
  • Bonding: correct

Tends to crack when nailed. Bonding requires care because of density and presence of resins.

END-USES

Does not stain easily (yellow or white deposits). Capping is recommended to obtain a good finish. shipbuilding
